OAKLAND PARK, FL – On February 16 the Girl Scouts of Broward County asked women from all over Broward to tap their “inner girl” at “Be A Girl Again,” a first-ever open house-style event for women. More than 60 women gathered at the Girl Scout headquarters in Oakland Park to sing classic songs around the campfire, eat gooey s'mores, make crafts and share memories of their childhood days as Girl Scouts.

The evening, complete with official flag ceremony presented by Troop #1082 from Fort Lauderdale, was anchored by veteran Girl Scout adult volunteers who assisted those whose outdoor skills were a little rusty. “This is all about having fun again,” said Leslie Roth, Executive Director/CEO for the Girl Scouts of Broward County. “ We wanted a way for women to reconnect with their Girl Scout past – and more importantly – discover all the ways they can get involved again as adults.”

Reminiscing was part of the fun as guests heard from the girls in Troop #1050 of Pompano Beach tell stories about their group trips to the Swimming Hall of Fame, Viscaya and the Girl Scouts’ Camp Nocatee in Clewiston, Florida. Troop Leader, Brandee Smith, told guests how she too is a busy professional and evening college student who found the time to make a difference in the lives of her girls. “I was a mentor and ‘Big Sister,’ but one-on-one volunteering wasn’t enough for me,” Smith said. “I take their phone calls about every little thing, even fake finger nails and first boyfriends. I want them to know that when it’s really important, I’ll be here to listen.” After speaking, the girls taught two popular “Brownie-style” crafts to the adults including beading a bracelet that declared “I "heart" GS.”

Girl Scouts of Broward County currently serves more than 9,100 girls and 4,500 adult volunteers. They will plan to hold a second “Be A Girl Again” event in the coming months. If you would like to receive an invitation, contact Nancy Hart at (954) 739-7660, ext. 225.
