Send the all-American treat to deserving American soldier: Girl Scouts in Broward offer “Cookies From Home”

     Date: 1/14/2008

OAKLAND PARK, FL --- On January 17, more than 5,000 Girl Scouts across Broward County will start selling the all-American cultural icon, Girl Scout Cookies. However if your New Year’s resolution is to skip the sweets you can still take part in this annual tradition. Broward Girl Scout troops are providing customers the opportunity to buy cookies and donate them to actively serving American military troops through our “Cookies From Home” program. For a third year, cookie customers can support two kinds of troops – our brave military troops and local Girl Scout troops.

This year “Cookies From Home” will partner with Soldiers’ Angels, a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist with the comfort and care of soldiers. Cookie customers will encounter Girl Scout troops in front of retail establishments between Jan. 17 and Feb. 5 and may purchase as many boxes as they would like for soldiers. Customers will pay the Girl Scout troop on site and they will special order the cookies to be delivered directly to Soldiers’ Angels for immediate distribution to military personnel. There are no shipping costs for the customer. Girl Scout Cookies cost $3.50 per box. Cookie booths can be found through out Broward County. To locate a booth near you, please call Schawana Strickland, Product Program Manager at (954) 739-7660 ext. 243.

“We are so proud of the courageous military men and women serving to protect our country. And once again we feel strongly about continuing to give the community a way to send a ‘taste of home’ as well as a thank you,” said Leslie Roth, CEO.

For the Girl Scouts of Broward County the meaning of “Cookies From Home” really comes home every time they receive a thank you letter from an American soldier. One letter recently stated, “I want to thank you very much for the cookies. I and all of the guys here really enjoyed them. We very much appreciate the care package of all those cookies. … We all thank you! The cookies were awesome.”

This year’s Girl Scout cookie line-up includes favorites such as Thin Mints, Samoas, Do-Si-Dos , Trefoils, Tagalongs, and All Abouts and introduces two new cookies: Lemon Chalet Crèmes, featuring a lemon creme filling with a touch of cinnamon and the Sugar Free Chocolate Chips, all the sweet great taste but without the sugar.

The annual Girl Scout Cookie Program Activity is the nation’s premier financial literacy and entrepreneurship program for girls. Girls learn life long skills such as goal setting, teamwork, customer service, and money management. Proceeds from the Annual Cookie Sale Program activity stay in Broward County. Each participating Girl Scout Troop uses their proceeds to fund their troop’s activities.

Girl Scouts of Broward County serves approximately 9,000 girls and 4,500 adult volunteers. To learn more about the Girl Scouts of Broward County, registering your girl, adult volunteering or providing funding support, please visit www.browardgirlscouts.org or call (954) 739 – 7660.
