Broward Girl Scouts will celebrate national birthday with county-wide service projects
Fort Lauderdale, FL --- On March 13, the national Girl Scouts organization (GSUSA) will celebrate its 92nd birthday. To commemorate this special day the Girl Scouts of Broward County has developed two community service project events.
Troops may participate in one of two ways for the first of the two service projects –“Scouting for Food and Comfort” – to benefit Project Linus and The Coordinating Council of Broward. During the week preceding the birthday, Girl Scout Week (March 7-13) Girl Scout Troops will conduct food drives in their schools, places of worship, and neighborhoods for donation to The Coordinating Council of Broward’s Million Meals Project. Troops may also participate in “Scouting for Food and Comfort” by becoming a “blanketeer” by making new, hand-made blankets for Project Linus, which benefits seriously ill and traumatized children.
On March 13 all participating troops will join at The Fountains in Plantation (On University Drive, just north of I-595) where a drop-off center will be hosted between 9 a.m. –12 p.m. Representatives from both Project Linus and The Coordinating Council will be on hand to accept and transport donations. Participating Girl Scouts will receive a free patch sponsored by The Fountains. To better involve the community, The Fountains merchants will have donation boxes in their stores during the month of March.
Troops have three ways to participate in the second service project, called “A Day of Caring” to benefit Kids In Distress, a comprehensive treatment center for abused and neglected children in need of several services from the community. Troops will work at Kids In Distress on March 13, also from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., in one of the three projects: “Project Clean-It” is a campus clean up; “Project Collect-It” will be the collection and organization of food, infant and garden supplies; and “Project Plant It” is planting a garden at the Kids In Distress campus.
All the Girl Scout birthday community service projects are intended to make a visible and far-reaching impact on our community as we illustrate one of the most important aspects of our organization’s mission - giving back to others. These projects are designed for girls of all age-levels to participate in and by doing so they will develop leadership skills, increase their community awareness and learn to be sensitive to the needs of others.
Girl Scouts of Broward County, Inc. serves more than 9,100 girls and 4,500 adult volunteers. For more information about the 92nd national Girl Scout Birthday visit: www.girlscouts.org.
