Oakland Park, FL --- Girl Scouts of Broward County will partner with the Sheridan Technical Center in Hollywood and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for a first ever “Cut-A-Thon” benefiting the Lake Worth based organization Locks of Love on Saturday, October 13, 2007. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides high-quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children with medical hair loss. Accommodating 100 Girl Scouts, between 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., the Sheridan Technical Center has donated the time and talent of their Cosmetology department along with twenty students and program instructors to provide free haircuts for the “Cut-A-Thon.”

As part of the Congresswoman’s ‘G.I.F.T’ program (Get It Fixed Today), which aims to inspire members of the community to participate in charitable activities, she contacted the Girls Scouts of Broward County not only because of her involvement as a Brownie Troop Leader, but also because of their strong emphasis on philanthropy.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to work with and inspire America's girls to share their confidence with others,” said Wasserman Schultz. “Self-esteem is an integral part of a girl's development and Locks of Love goes beyond superficial beauty to restore children’s loss of self, so if we can teach girls to give a physical piece of themselves while flourishing mentally, I am delighted to participate in such a positive event for everyone involved."

For more than 95 years the Girl Scouts have been building girls of courage, confidence and character who make this world a better place. Creating the “Cut-A-Thon” seemed like the perfect project! “Community service has always been a strong part of our foundation in Girl Scouting,” said Girl Scouts of Broward County’s CEO Leslie Roth. “Our girls give back more than 75,000 hours of service to our community each year. Now our Cut-A-Thon invites them to truly share a piece of themselves and make the world – of another child – a better place.”

Locally, Girl Scouts of Broward County serves more than 8,000 girls and 4,000 adult volunteers annually. For more information about the Girl Scouts of Broward County, including adult volunteering opportunities and girl registration, call 954-739-7660 or visit www.browardgirlscouts.org.
