Parkland, Florida --- It’s back to camp with a “S’mores, Barbeque and Fun” event at Girl Scout Camp Telogia in Parkland on Friday, November 2 to raise funds, a fence and awareness about the camp’s revitalization projects. Host Committee Chairperson, State Representative Ari A. Porth (District 96) has joined the Girl Scouts of Broward County to present a unique evening in the outdoors along with live music, barbeque, and campfires for s’mores and sing-alongs.

This first fundraiser will support the multi-phase Revitalization Project – and first on the agenda is to “raise the fence” around the camp’s perimeter. In 2005, winds from Hurricane Wilma brought down trees, destroyed the privacy and perimeter. By replacing the fence, a curtain of privacy will be re-established for the enhancement of the Girl Scouts’ camp experiences.

“Joining with the Girl Scouts of Broward County in their efforts to revitalize Camp Telogia, a natural treasure right in my own backyard, has been truly a meaningful honor for me” said Porth. “I commend the Girl Scouts in their work of developing girls to become the leaders of tomorrow while making their communities better places to live.”

Located in Parkland, Camp Telogia stretches out across 13 acres of green space with the appearance of an “old Florida nature-scape” and is an oasis for the local wildlife. It is nestled within a dynamic, flourishing urban community yet retains its natural pastoral like qualities.

For 46 years Camp Telogia has been providing an authentic rustic camping and outdoor experience to city dwelling Girl Scouts, who are still just minutes away from home. It is their home away from home where they can safely experience the outdoors while gaining friendships, an appreciation for nature, the environment, and outdoor living skills. These lessons of nature soon translate into lessons for life.

And through the years Girl Scout membership has grown in Broward County and times have changed. With this in mind, plans for Camp Telogia’s revitalization include increasing the over-night girl/camper capacity by 50%. Additionally, each of the four camp sites will have its own distinctive features to allow for age level progression – from cabins to tents. In addition, there will also be an air conditioned building for summer and school vacation day camp programs as well as a water feature.

Because of the Revitalization efforts, Camp Telogia – the next generation- will be able to attract and offer the new generation of Girl Scouts more versatile and meaningful year-round camping experiences.
