DAVIE, FL --- Girl Scouts of Broward County has partnered with Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, BankAtlantic Foundation and uniquely ME! (Girl Scouts and Dove Self-Esteem Fund) to offer local girls their “degree in self esteem” on Saturday, April 12.

For a second year, “uniquely U” will bring together approximately 150 local girls, in grades 6-9, at the Florida Atlantic University’s Davie campus for an interactive, collegiate-themed event which emphasizes inner beauty, stress management, self defense and advocacy.

Created by the Girl Scouts of the USA and the Dove Self-Esteem Fund to address the critical nationwide problem of low self-esteem among adolescent and pre-adolescent girls, the uniquely ME! program is designed to foster positive self-esteem among girls, ages 8 to 17. The local “uniquely U” event was designed in 2007 with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to address key issues affecting middle-school age girls with powerful, hands-on activities that will emphasize self assurance and inspire self confidence.

“It is vital that with the pressure of today’s pop-media culture that we provide positive role models and life lessons for girls,” said Wasserman Schultz. Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz will lead the “Express It!” class, where girls will learn about advocacy and their personal power to work for change for themselves, for their friends and in their community. Girls will find out first hand how to advocate for what they think is important and how to get their thoughts and messages into the hands (and ears) of those who can help them make positive change.

Girl Scouts is the world leader when it comes to the issues facing girls today. Low self-esteem is pervasive among pre-adolescent and adolescent girls in the United States and research conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute demonstrates that risky behavior such as smoking; drinking, eating disorders and others are often associated with low self-esteem. The “uniquely U” event takes these issues on and asks girls to look inside for strength and spirit to be the best people they already are and inspire them strive to be the real, powerful women of the future.

Girl Scouts build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts of Broward County, Inc. has been serving girls and their families locally since 1935 and last year served more than 8,000 girls and 4,400 adult volunteers.
