Pembroke Pines, FL --- A group of adult Girl Scout volunteers in South Western Broward County have produced an original, and very charming, new cookbook entitled “Cooking with Kids.” This cookbook is a fundraiser for the local group at the price of $5 each. The sale of the cookbooks will raise the much-needed funds to deliver Girl Scout program and service to the girl members in this geographic area.
“Cooking with Kids” is a 70-page cookbook with lots of fun stuff you wouldn’t expect from your average cookbook. One feature, entitled ‘Camp Cooking’ includes a “recipe” for making an oven out of a cardboard box and a recipe for “Trash Can Turkey” – an outdoor delicacy.
Other chapters include Breakfast & Bread, Appetizers & Beverages, Main Dishes, Vegetables & Side Dishes, Desserts, Cookies & Candies, and another
unusual section entitled: Playtime. The Playtime chapter includes recipes for homemade lip-gloss, edible finger paint, GAK, face paint, as well as a mini volcano and lightning in the house.
While the adult volunteers coordinated, wrote and edited the cookbook the girl members of Girl Scouts in this area of the county had their own special role in the project, “Girls and troops submitted lots of recipes and others got into it by trying out recipes at home and troop meetings,” said Stephanie Paul, Wetlands volunteer Service Unit Manager (and project manger for the cookbook) “The girls helped with kid-testing for taste and overall fun.“
What Girl Scout cookbook would be complete without recipes for your favorite Girl Scout cookies? In “Cooking with Kids” you’ll find recipes for your leftover Do-Si-Do’s, Thin Mints and Samoas. But Stephanie stresses, “This cookbook is not just for Girl Scouts, it’s for anyone who wants to find the fun in their own kitchen (or a campground) with their kids.”
The area of South Western Broward County is called the “Wetlands Service Unit” and it is one of 29 service areas (or units) within the Girl Scouts of Broward County. It is located in the cities of Pembroke Pines and Miramar. Proceeds for the “Cooking with Kids” cookbook will benefit this area and their Girl Scout activities.
Girl Scouts of Broward County, Inc. serves more than 9,100 girls and 4,500 adult volunteers. For more information about Girl Scouting in Broward, call (954) 739-7660 or visit: www.girlscouts.org. To purchase a “Cooking with Kids” cookbook, call Stephanie Paul at (954) 885-8327.
